The Red Balloon was founded in 1972 by a group of 10 families living in 560 Riverside Drive (a Columbia University residence building). These families were in need of childcare and led by Rebecca Rikleen created a Parent Cooperative preschool in the building. The space was donated by Columbia University. As the need for quality childcare grew the program expanded as did the space provided. The school was and is licensed by the Board of Health. Later the ACS program was added so we could include neighborhood families who otherwise would not be able to afford the school. Though no longer a Parent Cooperative we continue to have an open door policy and we welcome and encourage parent participation.
Our goal is to create a community where young children are inspired to test the waters of life. We understand that true learning is about taking risks. With encouragement and support we embolden our children to work through challenges and forge ahead into new territories. This is all done within a safe and nurturing environment.
